Back in January, Ford unveiled a mid-cycle refresh for the Mustang. The most significant update—besides the controversial new looks—was the availability of MagneRide magnetorheological adaptive dampers, which were previously available only on the Shelby GT350. Now, it seems the 2018 Mustang GT is getting a higher redline as well.
A post on the Mustang6g forum sprang up earlier this month, full of pictures from a photo shoot of the newly refreshed Mustang. While most of the shots show the outside of the cars, one interior picture of a yellow GT seems to reveal a 7500-rpm redline.
If that picture is accurate, it means a 500-rpm jump from the 2015–2017 Mustang GT models, but still shy of the 8250-rpm redline from the GT350 with its flat-plane crank. It should also be noted that on Ford’s 2018 Mustang website, a 7500-rpm redline is shown on a screenshot of the new electronic dash, but there’s no information as to what engine the screenshot is paired to.
The 2018 model’s 5.0-liter V-8 now has port and direct fuel injection, allowing a higher compression ratio, and this could be the reason behind the increased rotation. Power output has yet to be released, but expect it to climb above the current engine’s 435 horsepower.
