We’ve learned a lot already about the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon over its excruciating, months-long teaser campaign, including its two-step ignition system, its suspension that optimizes front-to-rear weight transfer during launches, and its special launch-control system. With less than a week to go before the car’s actual unveiling, the latest news concerns what fuels the Demon.
The answer is: premium unleaded (91 octane) pump gas or 100-plus-octane racing fuel. Dodge claims the Demon is the first car to offer this dual-fuel capability from the factory.
Except that “from the factory” may be overstating things. Dodge said: “The keys to unleashing the Demon’s full fury are shipped separate[ly], in the Demon Crate.” There, owners will find a special powertrain control module that allows the engine to run on the higher-octane fuel. They’ll also find a new switch bank for the center stack; it includes a button for “HO” fuel (pictured above), located right next to the one to access launch control. So it sounds as if there’s some DIY work involved to unlock the dual-fuel capability.
Dual fuel does not mean dual fuel tanks. The higher-octane gasoline is pumped into the regular tank, and if the combined octane rating is too low (as monitored by engine knock sensors), a message appears alerting the driver that the high-output fuel setting—which changes spark timing—is not available. Although there is a single tank, the Demon’s fuel system does differ from the standard Hellcat’s in that it has two fuel pumps, larger injectors, and higher rail pressure.
