Nissan Caters to Canines with X-Trail 4Dogs Concept

Smart has its two-person Fortwo and four-passenger Forfour, but it’s hard to believe it has taken until now for an automaker to introduce a vehicle specifically 4Dogs. Nissan now has stepped into the breach with its 4Dogs concept, a specially modified version of its European X-Trail (our Nissan Rogue).

Citing a U.K. study showing that “almost every dog owner considers their pet to be part of the family” and that “99 percent use their car to transport their dog”—this took research?— Nissan has built an X-Trail with a cargo area kitted out to cater to canines. A drawer under the load floor houses a hose for dog washing and another for dog drying. A ramp deploys from under the floor to allow Cujo to scamper aboard. The cargo area itself contains a dog bed, a clip-on safety harness, a “no spill” water bowl, and a treat dispenser. Oh, and it’s lined in leather. Because all concept cars must contain at least one high-tech component, there is a built-in screen and a two-way camera, which allows the driver to see his or her furry friend and vice versa.

What you won’t see are any of these accessories at a Nissan store today. But considering that the same study found 89 percent of dog owners “would buy a car that boasts dog-friendly features,” Nissan would be barking mad not to add them.
