ForTuned: Brabus Ultimate 125 Is Billed as the “Ultimate City Sports Car”

To Brabus, the minuscule, underpowered Smart Fortwo is the foundation on which the “ultimate city sports car” is meant to be built. The tuner has been churning out Smart-based creations for years, and the Ultimate 125 is the latest, sitting high above the regular Smart Fortwo Brabus.

Fortunately, it’s easy to tell where Brabus’s hyperbole ends and reality begins. In the same sentence in which Brabus refers to the Ultimate 125 as a “supercar,” it also notes that the little runabout’s peak horsepower figure stands at a dwarfish 123 ponies. Don’t get us wrong; that’s a decent amount of power for something as small as the Smart Fortwo. The 34-hp bump over the stock turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which comes by way of a Brabus-tweaked intake, intercooler, and engine-management system, drops the claimed zero-to-60-mph time to a blistering 9.2 seconds and raises the top speed to a harrowing 109 mph.

The car’s performance, such as it is, hardly steals the show. That’s the job of the Ultimate 125’s Widestar body kit, 18-inch forged-aluminum wheels, and trio of exhaust outlets. Did you notice the color? It’s called Blu Glauco. Brabus even slathered much of the interior in leather dyed in the same hue, although buyers can opt for “any imaginable color” inside or out—presumably even tasteful ones. While the Fortwo cabriolet is shown here, it is also available as a hardtop coupe.

In total, Brabus will build 125 Ultimates. Prices are just as ultimate, or ultimately shocking: The coupe starts at the equivalent of $52,970 at current exchange rates. The cabrio costs even more, but can you put a price on the “ultimate city sports car”?
