There was a time when America was deprived of 600-hp Audi sedans. That time is no more. The 2016 Audi S8 Plus and RS7 Performance, the most powerful Audi four-doors ever, are rocketing their way to Manhattan, Miami, Los Angeles, Greenwich, and every other town planting money trees.
The S8 Plus replaces the regular S8—a full-size sedan with 520 horsepower and 481 lb-ft of torque—for the same $115,825 price. (The ask for every other 2016 Audi has gone up, as we’ve detailed here.) The S8 Plus is now the only way to rock a standard-wheelbase big Audi, as the A8 was also discontinued in favor of the five-inch longer A8L. But this is a matter of speed, not size. Software tweaks and higher turbo boost pressure take the 4.0-liter V-8 to 605 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque (with 553 lb-ft possible for a few seconds, likely to coincide with a fresh criminal record). No-cost matte gray paint and new 21-inch wheels round out the changes.
The $129,925 RS7 Performance doesn’t replace the RS7. Rather, it’s a new trim level that employs the same modifications for more horsepower (605, up from 560; torque remains the same 517 lb-ft, except during overboost). It also bolts on standard go-faster equipment that’s optional on the S8 plus, such as the $11,000 Dynamic Package (carbon-ceramic brakes, sport exhaust, carbon fiber lip spoiler, increased top speed limiter to 190 mph) and the $5500 Black Optic exterior package (various gloss-black body parts and carbon-fiber mirror housings).
Fully kitted out with extra leather and driver assists like night vision, an RS7 Performance will command about $142,000; the S8 Plus, $151,000. What’s sort of generous, especially considering that German automakers usually operate like à la carte steakhouses, are the array of no-charge options. The dozen or so paint colors, four wheel styles, and the Alcantara headliner add only zeros to the window sticker. Go ahead, indulge.
