Attention, all enthusiasts of carbon-fiber-intensive electric cars: The BMW i3 now can be had with an electrically powered sunroof.
Until now, U.S.-market i3s were unavailable with glass in their roofs, even as overseas versions had offered one since the car’s 2013 debut. The 2016 i3 Shadow Sport Edition comes with a conventional power-tilting sunroof; inside, occupants see two separate panels with individual shades. For now, this is the only i3 available with a sunroof, but if you want one, act fast: Just 50 fully electric examples (as opposed to the version with the range-extending engine) will be sold.
The $48,395 sticker brings never-before-seen Fluid Black paint with bright blue highlights for the dark grey cloth seats. It’s part of a new top-level trim line called Deka World (over the base Mega, mid-level Giga, and Tera). A new sport-tuned suspension is another Shadow Sport goodie, although BMW didn’t specify the changes, or if the Deka World trim would be offered in non-special-edition i3s. The 19-inch 10-spoke wheels are the same as fitted to Tera examples, while there is a plaque inside to commemorate the car’s short run.
The other, non-sunroofed i3 models haven’t changed in price or equipment for 2016. Base prices start at $43,395 for the battery version with an EPA-estimated 81-mile range, or from $47,245 for the gas-powered Range Extender model with 150 miles of total range.
