Buyers of Toyota Camrys and Ford Explorers generally don’t give a hoot about special editions of their automobiles, but rich folks—and Miata fans—they love ‘em. For proof, look no further than all these Neiman Marcus special editions cranked out over the last few years. Alas, the new Bentley Bentayga isn’t waiting to appear in some stinkin’ holiday catalog to be rendered as a special edition; it’s being launched in the form of a special model, called the Bentayga First Edition. And it won’t be cheap.
Bentley will build 608 examples of the Bentayga First Edition, representing about one sixth of the first year’s production. Why 608? Because that’s how many (metric) horsepower its 12-cylinder engine produces. What makes it unique among Bentaygas? Well, there are Union Jack badges on the rear fenders, carbon-fiber addenda, black insets in the 22-inch wheels, and illuminated sills on the outside. Inside, the British flag is rendered in brushed metal on the passenger dash panel, there’s unique contrast stitching, special ambient lighting, and embroidered seats with “Diamond within Diamond” quilting, which sounds expensive on top of expensive.
That’s all fine, but what makes every First Edition really fancy is the Breitling watch that comes with it—buyers can choose among three worth between $10,000 and $21,000—each of which features a black mother-of-pearl face, arms that match the Bentayga Bronze feature color of the first Bentayga shown, and rubber straps patterned after certain of the interior components. The watches, for what it’s worth, will eventually be offered to customers of other Bentaygas.
The first of the First arrive in May, with U.S.-bound models priced at a cool $297,400, a fair chunk above the Bentayga’s $229,100 base price. You’d better really like that watch.
