Are we really ready for a purple revival yet? Jeep certainly seems to think so, railing against the trend towards blandly inoffensive colors by showing the new Wrangler Backcountry special edition that will be unveiled at the L.A. auto show in this particularly vivid hue, one it dubs “Xtreme Purple.” They should also issue a warning that looking at it for too long may trigger the sort of 1990s flashback that might well get you movin’ in with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air.

The name had us considering a raft of jokes involving both banjo music and Ned Beatty, but it turns out the Backcountry hasn’t been designed for Appalachian road trips but rather winter capability. Which at least goes some way to explaining why it’s been launched wearing a color that was last seen on a ski jacket in Aspen in about 1995. Don’t worry: Other, less vibrant, shades are available—blue, black, white, and gray—although the deep purple will be unique to the Backcountry.

Based on the Wrangler Sahara, the Backcountry both as a two-door and a four-door Unlimited. It has unique pink decals—which look like graffiti tags from more than a few feet away—and sits on 17-inch black Rubicon wheels. Rock rails are standard and side steps a no-cost option; it’s definitely at the harder-cored end of the Wrangler clan. Inside it’s less flamboyant, with gloss-black plastic trim, black leather seat bolsters, and fitted slush mats. The nine-speaker Alpine premium sound system and full connectivity package are also standard.

The Backcountry arrives just before the snow flies, in late November. The pricing, unfortunately, doesn’t stick with the 1990s theme set by the rest of the car: The two-door Wrangler Backcountry is $35,590, while the four-door is $39,390—both are $4700 over a standard Sahara.
