Volkswagen has announced that its EA288 diesel engines—separate from the EA189 at the heart of the company’s diesel-emissions scandal—do not have cheat software to skirt EU5 and EU6 emissions standards in Europe. At this point in the game, we’d imagine VW would be trying to get ahead of any potential further emissions-related scandal, so the company’s need for a “thorough examination” to come to the conclusion its own engines are emissions-compliant in Europe strikes us as troubling.
And Volkswagen isn’t out of the woods yet when it comes to the EA288 engine, mostly because while the motor is confirmed to comply with EU5 and EU6 emissions requirements, its compliance in the U.S. is still up in the air. As VW puts it, the company is “systematically reviewing this issue worldwide. The group strives for a holistic solution for complying with the respective valid standards.” In the meantime, plans to come up with plans to fix affected EA189 diesels are still being discussed.
