1993 Mazda MX-6

Mazda has announced a recall of some 1.2 million 1998-and-earlier cars for an ignition-switch defect that can lead to the risk of a fire.

The switches were produced with too much grease inside. Over time, that grease can carbonize and accumulate between the connection points in the thermal base of the switch, which can lead to them becoming conductive, and then overheating and potentially catching fire. Mazda doesn’t say how many instances have been recorded, only that there have been no accidents or injuries related to the defect.

The affected models are:

1989–1998 MPV

1990–1996 323/ProtegĂ©

1992–1993 MX-3

1993–1995 929

1993–1997 MX-6

1993–1998 626

Mazda will begin replacing the defective switches in December.
