Carmakers are storied as McLaren pillage their past at their own risk, but in the case of the luscious new 650S Can Am, the company’s illustrious racing past appears rather well served. As the name implies, the 650S Can Am pays homage to the Can Am racing series, which commenced almost a half century ago and which McLaren absolutely dominated from 1967 through 1971. The car itself will be offered only in open-top, spider form and features the company’s first carbon-fiber retractable hardtop. Carbon fiber is also found on the hood, front splitter, rear bumper, door blades, sills, and spoiler/air brake. Other special bits include quad stainless steel tailpipes, louvers over the front fenders, black wheels with brushed rims, and an available racing livery pack.

Only 50 will be made worldwide, in one’s choice of Mars Red, Papaya Spark, and Onyx Black, all inspired by McLaren factory and customer race teams in the past. Production starts in 2016, in commemoration Can Am’s Golden Jubilee. The price for U.S. customers? A cool $338,600, including delivery.

In other news, the Autovisie reports that McLaren has revisited its decision to offer the track-oriented 675LT “long tail” only as a coupe, and has green-lighted a spider model. Considering that the 675LT coupe’s entire 500-car run sold out in just a couple months, the 675LT spider is a bit of a no-brainer. (Gee, are you interested in grabbing free money, McLaren?) For its part, all McLaren was willing to say at this point is that dealers have indeed expressed interest in such a thing (duh), and that it’s under consideration.
