In a bid to break the logjam over the issue, the Centre had on Sunday night appealed to opposition parties to move on and enable smooth functioning of the House from today.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu's appeal came in the wake of wash out of Rajya Sabha proceedings virtually for a week and disruptions in the Lok Sabha over the Union Minister's remarks for which she later expressed regret.
"Parliament belongs to both treasury and opposition parties. Both are responsible for its smooth functioning. One precious week was lost in Rajya Sabha last week. Minister Sadhvi Niranjan and the PM responded quickly out of respect for opposition and Parliament. Our government has the highest respect for opposition. I appeal to all parties to enable smooth functioning of Parliament from tomorrow," he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also issued a fresh appeal to parties on Friday last but it failed to break the deadlock.
In the Rajya Sabha, nine opposition parties had come out with a joint statement seeking joint resolution condemning the remarks of Sadhvi who, they said, deserves outright sacking.
The government is also expected to engage the Opposition in talks to break the deadlock over the controversy as it is under pressure to take up several crucial bills for clearance.
The Opposition has made it clear that they would not back down further from the demand for a resolution to censure divisive remarks by MPs and ministers. Sources claim that the government may agree to a resolution provided its language is not embarrassing for it.
While the winter session runs into the last week of December, there is bound to be urgency in the ruling ranks because of the heavy legislative agenda lined up including key reform bills like on coal allocation and FDI in insurance sector which is to be cleared by the select committee.
