NEW DELHI: Shiv Kumar Yadav, the 32-year-old cab driver accused of raping a 25-year-old executive working with a global tax consultancy and advisory firm on Saturday night, was arrested on Sunday after an unflagging search operation that involved a chase through the streets of Mathura and ended with the police busting a house in which the accused had holed up.

The arrest came barely three hours after Delhi Police declared a reward of Rs 1 lakh on Yadav.

Yadav is married to his brother's widow. He has two daughters and a stepson. While his wife and daughters stay in Mathura, the boy stays with Yadav's brother in Delhi. Yadav has been a cab driver in Delhi for a few years now.

Sources said he has confessed to the crime during interrogation but has shown little remorse. "Galti ho gayi saab, kya karoon ab (I committed a mistake. What do I do now)," he told an interrogator.

The police have also sent a notice to the rideshare service Uber to join investigations and explain the "lapses and negligence" in its operation which has drawn the attention of investigators.

"We have sent the notice to Uber under 161 CrPC. The driver also did not have a public service verification (PSV) badge or an employer's verification certificate," DCP (north) Madhur Verma said.

A source in the probe team told TOI that the police had zeroed in on Yadav on Sunday afternoon after ascertaining his presence through a local tip-off. Special commissioner (law and order) Deepak Mishra said that his team had carried out the operation to apprehend Yadav at 6pm through "scientific identification and investigation procedures" involving local intelligence.

Yadav was accompanied by a friend and was apparently heading to a safer hideout after collecting money when the teams closed in on him around 6pm. Yadav spotted the police team and ran through the streets to dodge them. However, three teams led by ACP Devesh Mahla, ACP Subhash Tandon and SHO Anil Dureja zeroed in on him from three directions.

Yadav entered a random house and locked himself. He was apparently looking for a hostage when Dureja's team broke open the door and pinned him down on the floor. He was overpowered and frisked for weapons or poison that he may be carrying and was subsequently placed under arrest.

He was produced before a magistrate and is being brought to Delhi amidst heavy security on a production warrant.

DCP Mahur Verma told TOI that they will be moving for a test identification parade (TIP) of the accused and are collecting all the scientific evidence including DNA samples which will be analyzed by forensic experts.

A team led by additional DCP Brijendra Yadav has been assigned to prepare a watertight chargesheet in the case and the police will move for the maximum punishment recommended under the amended rape laws.

The police is also verifying Yadav's antecedents to know if he is involved in criminal cases before.

The operation in Mathura was carried out after a 12-hour investigation conducted in Delhi which led to the identification of the accused. The biggest challenge for the cops was to get to the office of the cab service to obtain the identification details of the driver and the GPS logs of the cab to ascertain its route.

However, cops could neither find the address nor a phone number of the firm. "Brijender Yadav then enrolled himself on the website as a customer and booked a cab. Once the cab arrived, he was asked to head to the cab service's office. That's how the cops reached the office. However, even there, they could not get anything of substance so they had to look for other clues," a senior cop said.

The cab also didn't have any GPS and the only connectivity was through the mobile app which the accused driver had exited by switching off his phone.

The cops then scanned the details of the mobile number which was furnished by the driver. It belonged to Yadav's friend Gaurav. The cops contacted those who had been in touch with the number and got some details.

The police also had the photograph of the cab which was clicked by the survivor and thus they scanned the details of the registration number ending with 7910 from the transport department.

The DZire was found to be registered in Yadav's name but three people took turns to drive it. Two were his friends, Gaurav and Kamal Kumar.

These details were furnished to the teams who were heading to Mathura. Mathura ASP extended all the help to the Delhi Police after which they began to work. Yadav's house was raided on Sunday morning but he was missing. The white colour Swift Dzire with a commercial (yellow) number plate was parked near his house. The vehicle was secured and forensic experts were called in.

However, leads stopped flowing in after that but the police continued to raid every house, including those of his friends, neighbours, acquaintances and relatives -- in fact, anyone with any connection with Yadav.

Around 3pm, the police commissioner declared a reward of Rs 1 lakh and the cops were soon tipped off about Yadav's whereabouts.

Our correspondent adds from Agra: Deputy inspector general (Agra) Lakshmi Singh told TOI that Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police in a joint operation arrested Yadav from the Mathura-Delhi highway, near Chandrapuri colony here.

According to police, the joint team's raid at Yadav's rented accommodation in Chandrapuri yielded nothing, as he and his family members were nowhere to be found.

"Following this, police traced residential addresses of his relatives who live close by. His brother-in-law, R P Singh, was arrested by Delhi Police along with his sister and one more relative. The main accused was arrested just a kilometer away from Chandrapuri," Singh said.
