A 19-year-old man was arrested on Saturday while trying to break open an ATM in Deonar. The suspect, Sameer Sarvar Ansari (left), told police he learnt how to open a cash machine on the Internet. The targeted machine had Rs 7 lakh in its vault.

Ansari, a resident of Govandi's Shivaji Nagar, was spotted behaving suspiciously near a Canara Bank ATM kiosk by a Deonar police patrol team around 2 am. When the cops checked, they found that Ansari had already opened the machine using tools he had brought, and was about to access the vault. He first claimed he was a repairman hired by the bank.

Assistant Police Inspector Anil Gaikwad contacted bank officials but on being told no repairs had been ordered, arrested Ansari.

"He was looking for quick money. He said he learnt online how to open an ATM and picked this one as it was in an insolated spot," said Deputy Police Commissioner (Zone VI) Sangramsinh Nishandar.

Ansari was booked under Sections 457 (trespassing) and 380 (theft), and was remanded in police custody. Police are investigating if he was involved in any previous ATM thefts.
