In a TV interview, President Obama has acknowledged that the US misjudged the rise of Islamic State in Syria.

"Our head of the intelligence community, Jim Clapper, has acknowledged that I think they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria," Mr Obama said.

Speaking to Steve Kroft on 60 Minutes he added: "It is so important for us to recognise part of our solution here is going to be military".

In the latest military action, US-led coalition aircraft targeted four makeshift oil refineries under Islamic State (IS) control in Syria, as well as a command centre.
