Taslima Nasrin gets one-year visa extension - Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Centre granted author Taslima Nasrin multiple entry visa (X visa) for one year which allows her to stay in India till August 2015.

Speaking to TOI, Taslima said, "I got a call from an official who said the government of India has given me a one-year residence permit. I will soon collect the relevant documents."

The phone call brought her relief and assuaged her fears of losing her "refuge" yet again. She has been living in exile since 1994.

Taslima, 52, has an EU passport and has been living in India on an X visa since 2004. Initially, she had to renew it every six months. Since 2011, the then UPA government had issued her X visa renewable every year.

However, she was in for a shock when in July the Centre extended her visa by only two months pending certain procedural formalities such as verification. Worried and agitated, Taslima met home minister Rajnath Singh on August 2 who assured her that the issue would be resolved.

On Monday, Taslima breathed easy. She has just returned from Europe after delivering the keynote address at the World Humanists' Congress at the Oxford University.

Her speech delineating her journey to atheism and fight against patriarchy received standing ovation from an audience comprising among others evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins.
