2019 VW Atlas 5 Passenger

Traditional advertising would have us believe that every family wants a vehicle with space for two parents, 2.5 kids, and a friend for each of those children, making the seven-passenger SUV the hot ticket for the dreamily nuclear American family. Ergo, it makes sense that when the minds at Volkswagen decided to get serious about the SUV market, they tackled the segment with an Atlas crossover appropriate for groups who might also be interested in Hammacher Schlemmer’s seven-person tricycle. But what if you’re strictly a five-person tandem kinda crew?

Turns out, VW is working on a product to sate your particular vehicular desires, chums, and it has been for some time. As you may have guessed, the vehicle in question is a five-passenger variant of the Atlas, and VW would like you to know that just like the seven-passenger variant, it’s designed with the U.S. market in mind and will be constructed in Chattanooga, Tennessee, right off the roundabout where Volkswagen Drive meets Ferdinand Piëch Way.

We have no word from Volkswagen on whether the five-place Atlas will be shorter than the seven-seater or whether it will retain its 117.3-inch wheelbase and simply dispense with the third row, but we’re on the cusp of finding out. The company is set to unveil the new MQB-based ute at the New York auto show next week, and during the launch hoopla, you might hear VW’s people refer to their new vehicle as a “coupé.”
