Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was engaged in his “personal PR” and has “failed to deliver anything concrete” in the past eight months.
Talking to reporters after a roadshow through the resettlement colony and slums of Govindpuri in south Delhi, Rahul said the BJP-led NDA government was in power at the centre since May but the Prime Minister is busy in his personal PR (public relations). “Not a single concrete thing has happened. The public is asking when will the talks get over and real work would begin,” he said. “The poor are being ignored and only a few industrialists are being benefitted,” he said.
Rahul’s comments, however, came under sharp criticism from the ruling party. Union parliamentary affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu said the comments only show to what extent the Congress is cut off from the reality of changes in the country.
“It clearly looks that the Congress and its leadership is rattled by the successful visit of the US President Barack Obama which concluded today (Tuesday). During this visit, a significant breakthrough has been achieved in taking forward the India-US Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement,” Naidu said.
Talking about the election issues, Rahul said every poor in Delhi will get a shelter if the Congress comes back to power.
In his first public interaction since the Delhi assembly elections were announced, Rahul said the way the Congress gave poor the right to education and MNREGA, it will also give them the right to shelter. “We have three promises. We will provide electricity and water at the lowest rate, will make contract workers permanent and give right to shelter to the people of Delhi,” he said.
Incidentally, Rahul’s roadshow started from Rajiv Gandhi Colony, a resettlement colony in Govindpuri area in south Delhi, which houses thousands of families who were given plots in lieu of their jhuggis when the slums of Ashram, Kilokari and other areas were removed almost 40 years ago. The Congress has promised ownership rights to the residents of the resettlement colonies in its election manifesto.
