A car like the 2017 Honda Civic Type R will always be in competition. Honda hasn’t even put the new hot hatch on sale yet, but given its rich global history and hype, it’s already getting sized up against rides like the Ford Focus RS, the Volkswagen Golf R, and the Subaru WRX STI. And, yes, that includes gas mileage, too.

Just a few weeks after Honda released the all-important 7:43.80 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time, a new number has come to light: 25. According to the EPA, the Type R is rated to get 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 combined with premium gas. There’s no word yet about whether the Type R requires premium fuel, but it probably will in order to allow the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four to make its full 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The four mates solely to a six-speed manual transmission, which shunts power to the front wheels, making this the only model among its immediate competitive set not to use all-wheel drive.

That could be part of the reason why the EPA rates it 3 mpg higher on the combined scale than the Ford Focus RS, which is rated at 22/19/25 mpg combined/city/highway. Or not. The Golf R uses all-wheel drive, too, and the EPA rates it at 25/22/31 with a manual transmission. The WRX STI trails far behind its cohorts with ratings of 19/17/23 mpg. Typically, fuel efficiency isn’t a major priority for high-performance cars like these, but when they have four doors and hatchbacks, there’s a high chance they’ll still be called into use as practical daily drivers.

Honda has yet to announce Type R pricing for the United States. It goes on sale later this spring, and beyond the cost, there’s just one major number left: its zero-to-60-mph time.
