If you’ve ever watched an onboard rally video, you may have wondered about those seemingly inscrutable instructions a rally co-driver yells out to let the driver know what lies ahead. Thanks to this video put together by Team O’Neil Rally School, we now know exactly how those stage notes work.
A rally is different from most racing events in that, in a rally, drivers have little idea which direction they’ll be turning next on any given stage, because each stage/section is driven just once in competition. Stage or pace notes, as they’re called in the rally world, are a collection of detailed turn-by-turn directions taken during a once-over of the stage so the co-driver can read them on the fly, calling out to the driver what lies ahead.
Wyatt Knox of the Team O’Neil school in New Hampshire has put together this extremely detailed explainer video outlining the ins and outs of how stage notes work, how they’re written, and how to read them while you’re hurtling down a dirt road at maximum speed.
So if you’re looking to get into the sport of rallying or just want to learn more, take a few minutes and watch this:
