Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling 1,021,279 Ram pickups in the U.S. due to a software glitch that turns off some of the occupant-restraint systems in rollover crashes. FCA said it knows of one fatality, two injuries, and two accidents that could be related to the issue.

Affected trucks include certain 2013–16 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups and 2014–2016 Ram 3500 pickups. The recall also includes 216,007 of the trucks in Canada, 21,668 in Mexico, and 21,530 outside of North America.

The automaker said its investigation found the problem stems from modules in some trucks that feature certain types of sensors. Underbody impacts could cause the modules to conclude that the sensor has failed. If that happens, a warning lights comes on in the instrument cluster, and a corresponding error code could temporarily disable the side airbag and seatbelt pretensioner, which tightens the seatbelts to prevent movement during impacts.

If the truck is turned off and then back on, the system may be returned to its normal function. The best way to verify this is if the warning light has turned off.

The company said it has sent recall notices with instructions on how to handle the issue. It will advise affected customers when they can schedule service. A fix will involve reprogramming the occupant-restraint control module.
