The Mazda CX-9 is big even among mid-size crossover/SUVs. At 199.4 inches long, the three-row Mazda overshadows the Honda Pilot by 4.9 inches. While bigger may be better to American consumers, this mentality doesn’t hold true throughout the world. That’s where the Mazda CX-8 steps in.
Mazda has yet to reveal the new model’s exterior, but the interior shot shows the CX-8 to be a three-row crossover SUV; it’s designed for Japanese consumption. Like the CX-9, the CX-8 sits on an approximately 115-inch wheelbase. The CX-8, however, is 6.5 inches shorter and 4.8 inches narrower than its numerically superior sibling. Power comes courtesy of Mazda’s 2.2-liter diesel engine paired to a six-speed automatic, a powertrain that is scheduled to find its way under the hood of the U.S. CX-5 by year’s end.
While the CX-8 will offer seven-passenger seating, the model also will be available with six seats thanks to a pair of comfortable-looking second-row buckets. Mazda is mum on the CX-8’s prospects for the United States, but given the distance between the CX-5 and the CX-9—and the current mania for crossovers—we’d say it’s not outside the realm of possibility.
