The Alfa Romeo Giulia is the resurgent Italian brand’s foray into the space occupied by the Audi A4, the BMW 3-series, the Cadillac ATS, and the Mercedes-Benz C-class, among others. Nearly all the contenders in this segment offer both sedans and two-door coupes, and according to a report on the Australian website Motoring, the Giulia will join them by adding a two-door model, set to bow next month at the Geneva auto show.
FCA is making a big push with Alfa Romeo—even showcasing the Italian brand with a three-commercial Super Bowl LI ad buy—obviously hoping to move Alfa beyond being a niche player. The Stelvia crossover soon will arrive as the second volume model, but a coupe version of the Giulia would help the Alfa match its competitors, and it makes perfect sense as way to flesh out the lineup. The Motoring report speculates that the two-door Giulia could take the name Sprint, which would be an appropriate nod to Alfa heritage.
The hot-blooded, 505-hp Quadrifoglio with its twin-turbocharged V-6 could take on the M4 and C63s coupes, while Alfa’s 2.0-liter turbo four would power the mainstream variants. Perhaps one or both would add a manual transmission to the mix, a choice currently unavailable to U.S. buyers of the Giulia sedan.
If pricing follows current conventions, a Giulia Sprint would come in a few grand dearer than its sedan siblings. That’s all well and good, but, given that the four-door Giulia has one of the most attractive bods in its class, we’re more interested to see what the Sprint will look like. It sounds as if we may not have long to wait.
