Depending on one’s automotive inclinations, the car show at The Quail golf resort may or may not be “the crown jewel” of Monterey Car Week (as the event bills itself), but after 14 years it certainly has built itself up to be a marquee event. It’s well worth our time, then, for a drop-by and a few snaps, which we’re happy to share with you.

In addition to the usual categories of Prewar Sports and Racing, Postwar Sports, Postwar Racing, Supercars, The Great Ferraris, and Sports and Racing Motorcycles, this year’s special categories were Rivalries of the Ages, A Retrospective of Laguna Seca Raceway, the 50th Anniversary of the Lamborghini Miura, and the 100th Anniversary of BMW.

The two anniversaries were the most evident. A rainbow-colored panoply of more than two dozen Miuras is a sight that will catch the eye. And BMWs were being celebrated at seemingly every turn, with a group of more Z8 roadsters than we’ve ever seen in one place, a batch of 3.0 CSL coupes, and, up on a platform, the just introduced 2002 Hommage Turbomeister concept and a vintage 2002 Turbo.

Surrounding the show field were displays from nearly every high-end manufacturer you could name: Bentley, Maserati, Acura, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Koenigsegg, Bugatti, and Lamborghini (Lambo unveiled the Centenario roadster). Interspersed among them were vendors hawking products aimed at a certain clientele: luxury yachts, fractional jet ownership, car-themed apparel of questionable taste. Feeding the wealthy masses were chefs from the Peninsula Hotels group—and the company’s white-hat-wearing porter mascot floating above it all as a hot-air balloon.

For the sights, click through our gallery, where we spare you some of the silliness and bring you only coolest and most interesting cars. You’ll have to supply your own snacks, though.
