Chevrolet Camaro Bumblebee

There’s another Transformers movie coming in 2017, and that means a new rash of mechatronic vehicles—er, we mean, characters—to debut. Director Michael Bay has already gotten started on those reveals, having slipped a photo of the new Chevrolet Camaro–based Bumblebee robot onto his Flickr account over the weekend. Surprisingly, the photo is free of explosions; unsurprisingly, the Bumblebee in the photo looks a lot like the sixth-generation Camaro.

So far, the photo attached here is all we have for the new and improved Bumblebee, but it could have repercussions far beyond the movie it stars in. General Motors has helped design several Transformers robots, including the most recent Bumblebee, which became a sort of preview for future Camaro design changes. Today’s Camaro by and large shares its look with the Bumblebee from Transformers: 4, and an earlier Bumblebee inspired a special-edition Transformers Camaro.

Provided that GM again had a hand in its design, the latest black-and-yellow Transformer could serve as a guide for the current Camaro’s inevitable mid-cycle refresh, due out in about three years. Chevrolet took some flak over the sixth-generation Camaro’s strong resemblance to the fifth-generation car. This Bumblebee’s angrier mug, with its plunging blackout grille and sculpted cheekbones—and minus all the show-car aero frippery—might put some of that criticism to rest. But perhaps we’re reading too much into this. Either way, look for Bumblebee (and lots of gratuitous explosions) in Transformers: The Last Knight come next year.
