The joke about Porsche never changing the design of the 911 is, at best, played out. Yes, the car has maintained a similar silhouette over the last five decades of its existence. Yes, the engine is still at the wrong end of the chassis. But underneath that steadfastly teardrop-shaped body, a whole lot of innovation has taken place.

You know this, of course. But unless you have a first-gen car and today’s 991 generation side-by-side, it can be hard to appreciate how much has changed.

That’s what makes this fun animation by Donut so great. It takes every generation of Porsche’s bass-ackwards sports car and highlights what changed, generation by generation.

Go ahead, watch the full video. Maybe you’ll learn something about the genesis of the 911. Maybe you already knew it all. Either way, it’s a fun little tour through the history of one of the world’s most iconic sports cars.
