With the news that Sabine Schmitz may not actually be co-hosting the upcoming relaunch of the BBC’s Top Gear, we were starting to wonder who would actually be joining Chris Evans on the show. Turns out, it’s someone who isn’t even British—it’s former Friends star Matt LeBlanc.
The BBC announced today that LeBlanc will join production immediately, with other cast members to be announced soon.
Especially considering he’s American, LeBlanc may sound like a random choice for the show, but as the BBC points out, he made two appearances on the old show and still holds the record for the fastest celebrity lap of the Top Gear test track. “As a car nut and a massive fan of Top Gear, I’m honored and excited to be a part of this iconic show’s new chapter,” said LeBlanc. “What a thrill!” The revamped version of the show is expected to air this coming May.
