Monterey Auctions Day 1: Top 10 Includes Pope John Paul II's Enzo

To some folks, Monterey Car Week hasn’t begun until the first irreplaceable automobile hammers sold for eight figures on one of the numerous auction blocks scattered across the peninsula. To them we say, “Monterey Car Week has officially begun.” As usual, RM Sotheby’s headlined the first big day of Monterey sales, and was the only auction house of the four active yesterday to sell a car for more than $200,000, according to a box score carefully compiled by our friends at Hagerty, the classic-car insurance company. From that list we’ve gathered photos and a bit of info on the 10 most expensive cars sold at auction on Thursday in Monterey. And only six are Ferraris.

1964 Ferrari 250LM

1. 1964 Ferrari 250LM, sold for $17,600,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
One of 32 built from a batch of one of history’s favorite Ferraris, this car has extensive (small-time) racing history and is mechanically all original, down to its 320-hp 3.3-liter V-12 and five-speed manual.

1998 McLaren F1

2. 1998 McLaren F1, sold for $13,750,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
It started out life as a “standard” F1, but the factory later upgraded this car to LM specifications. As such, it has a 680-hp, 6.1-liter V-12 but retains its roadgoing amenities.

2005 Ferrari Enzo

3. 2005 Ferrari Enzo, sold for $6,050,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
The final Enzo produced, this car was original given to Pope John Paul II. His Holiness respectfully declined the gift and asked that it be sold for charity. He died a few months later, but the proceeds were given to his successor, Pope Benedict XVI.

1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4

4. 1967 Ferrari 275GTB/4, sold for $3,300,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
Not red in the least—and all the more beautiful for it—this matching-numbers restoration has a 3.3-liter V-12 that we’d never tire of hearing sing.

1994 Ferrari F40 LM

5. 1994 Ferrari F40 LM, sold for $3,300,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
The F40 was fast, but the lighter, more-powerful LM edition was even more special. This car, one of just 19 produced, has a 720-hp 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-8.

1972 Ferrari 365GTS/4 Daytona Spider

6. 1972 Ferrari 365GTS/4 Daytona Spider, sold for $2,750,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
Ferrari built only 121 Daytona Spiders (although many others have been created, possibly with the help of a Sawzall or two), and this is one of them. This matching-numbers beauty has air conditioning and a 4.4-liter V-12.

1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV

7. 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV, sold for $2,475,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
This Lambo wears a color scheme traditionally seen on Ferraris incredibly well, particularly in top-tier SV form.

1985 Ferrari 288GTO

8. 1985 Ferrari 288GTO, sold for $2,420,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
Highly desirable, with fresh timing-belt service, power windows, and A/C.

2012 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

9. 2012 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, sold for $2,310,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
The final Veyron coupe, shown at Geneva in 2015, and showing only 308 miles. This 1200-hp bleached Bugatti would be a perfect time machine for visiting 1980s Miami.

2005 Maserati MC12

10. 2005 Maserati MC12, sold for $2,090,000 (RM Sotheby’s)
Remember these? Only 50 of Maserati’s rebodied Ferrari Enzo were built. This one has fewer than 500 miles on it and looks as wacky as it did a decade ago.

The top-selling vehicle from another auction house yesterday wasn’t a car at all but a 1914 Flying Merkel motorcycle that Mecum moved for $192,500; Mecum’s priciest car sale so far was a $154,000 2012 Aston Martin DB9. We’ll bring you more auction results through Sunday’s sales; Bonhams and Gooding are sure to feature some eight-figure classics.
