If The Little Car Show was a proletarian welcome to Monterey, stuff got hoity-toity really quick with the arrival of the McCall Motorworks event. Colloquially known as “The Jet Center” because, well, Gordon McCall throws the soirée at the Monterey Jet Center, this year’s show seemed more packed with aircraft than it has been in recent years, forcing attendees to bob, duck, and weave their way around wings and propellers, using caution to be sure they didn’t take an errant pitot tube to the eye.
Bryan Fuller brought out the monstrous, Boss 429–powered, all-wheel-drive Deuce roadster he calls the Double Down. The slicks on the thing make a Z/28’s 305s look like pizza cutters. There was a Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR parked on the tarmac, because hey man, Straßenversion. Inside, Rob Dickinson showed off a golden 964 Targa massaged by his customizing concern, Singer Vehicle Design. The next hangar over featured a gaggle of single-cylinder Moto Guzzis—the old ones, with the crazy, exposed flywheels.
We also ran across a bunch of old Nortons and Vincents and thought it might be fun to pull the motor from one of the Guzzis, stick it in a Norton frame, paint it rain-slicker yellow and call it a “Gorton.” Such a machine would obviously be a bike you could trust. Also trustworthy was GM’s vision of a future past, via one of the magnificent Futurliner buses from the company’s old traveling “Parade of Progress” exhibition. The side opened up to reveal an educational display touting the virtues of the turbine as a powerplant. And indeed, without that technology, the Jet Center might not have a name. Or everyone would be flying around in contraptions powered by buzzy pulsejets.
You also had your run of the mill Veyrons, Huayras, Ageras, and a pair of coke-white V-12 retromobiles in the form of a Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer and Lamborghini Diablo. Once the Lambo rolled out, so did the crowd. After all, it ceases to be a party once the devil leaves the premises.
