Kashmiri leaders welcome PM's UNGA speech - Daily Times

ISLAMABAD - Kashmiri leaders across the Line of Control have hailed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s address at the UN General Assembly saying that it fully reflected the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.


In his address to the UNGA on Friday, Nawaz Sharif made an emphatic call for resolution of Indian-held Jammu Kashmir conflict in line with the aspirations of Kashmiri people. Talking to journalists at Kashmir House here on Saturday, Azad Kashmir Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed termed the address as courageous and said that Pakistan’s support to Kashmir issue at the world body has given new dimensions to the freedom movement.


He said that the address had also foiled the Indian conspiracy to put the Kashmir issue in cold storage. He said that now no one could stop the Kashmiris to get their right to self determination in line with UN resolutions. He said since the BJP led government took over in New Delhi it was conspiring to change the ground realities of Kashmir issue. He said time they declare Kashmir as integral part of India and on other occasions, they talk of changing the special status of Kashmir given in Indian constitution.


Ch Abdul Majeed emphasised that Kashmir was recognised as a disputed territory under the UN resolution and under the division of India act, it needed solution. He said that the Kashmiri people were struggling for the last 67 years for exercising their right to self determination and have made Pakistan as advocate of their just cause. He said that the Kashmiris have full confidence and trust in their Advocate and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly raised the voice of Pakistan in support of Kashmiri people.


He declared that Kashmir issue could not be brought to an end till its resolution in line with the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiri people. AJK Prime Minister thanked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for courageously presenting the Kashmiris cause. Azad Jammu Kashmir Pakistan Muslim League-N President Raja Mohammad Farooq Haider Khan said that the prime minister has awakened the conscience of international community at the UN General Assembly about Kashmir issue.


Farooq Haider said that Nawaz Sharif reminded the international community in categorical term that it was their duty to play a role for the resolution of the lingering dispute. He said that the prime minister rejected the Indian pressure and made it clear that Kashmir issue could not be compromised. He described the speech of the prime minister of a statesman and made it clear to India that the only dispute between the two countries was Kashmir.


Azad Kashmir former pime minister said that the way Nawaz Sharif has been presenting Kashmir issue has no precedence in the history of Pakistan. All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Kashmir chapter said that Nawaz Sharif pleaded the Kashmir issue in General Assembly keeping the aspirations of Kashmiris. He said the reaction of the Indian rulers and media was like shutting eyes from an international reality.


He said that the Indian leaders and media should admit that it was their former prime minister Nehru who took the Kashmir issue to the United Nations and it was now incumbent upon them to fulfill the commitment made by Nehru for a plebiscite in Kashmir.
