PM Narendra Modi to meet Nepal President in Kathmandu today - IBNLive

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the last day of his Nepqal visit on Monday, will start the day with prayers at Kathmandu's famous Pashupatinath temple. He will then meet Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav and other political leaders including opposition leader Prachanda.


On Sunday, Modi addressed the Nepal Parliament in Hindi and Nepalese. He expressed his gratitude to his Nepalese counterpart Sushil Koirala and the people of Nepal for the warm welcome he experienced. He reached out to the neighbours speaking about the bond both the countries have shared for the years.


Modi also focused on the constitution formation of Nepal and advised the key features of a successful constitution. Speaking on the Nepal Constitution, Modi said, "A Constitution has to be made and Nepal has to be taken to new heights and we are ready to support you as a neighbour."


Speaking on the non violent nature of the country, he expressed his belief on the Constituent Assembly of Nepal and its capability to form a strong constitution. Refering to the change of seat of power from monarchy to a democratic government the Indian PM said, "Not only people of Nepal but also those who believe in the power of democracy are looking at Nepal and this assembly."


Modi promised to extend $ 1 billion line of credit to Nepal to be used according to Nepal's priorities and launch of a SAARC satellite. Modi further added, "India has decided to provide Nepal with NRs 10,000 crore (USD 1 billion) as concessional line of credit for various development purposes."


Modi, referring to the average age of Nepal and India, addressed the countries as young powers and highlighted the areas of mutual cooperation.


Elaborating his strategy, Modi said HIT in his lexicon implies - H:Highways, I:I-ways and T:Transways. He said these three combined together would pave the way for rapid development of the country and India wants to "give this gift at the earliest".


Modi asked support from the Himalayan neighbour in hydro power generation while he agreed to support Nepal in areas of road construction, information and technology and announced various scholarship to Nepalese students.


He reached Nepal on a two-day official trip earlier on Sunday. It is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Kathmandu in 17 years and both countries could possibly make big-ticket announcements.


Modi was received by Koirala, members of the Council of Ministers and other dignitaries at the airport. Koirala broke the protocol by personally receiving his Indian counterpart and it also highlighted the importance Nepal attached to the visit.
