Pakistan Protester Dies in Clashes With Police - ABC News

Pakistani police are clashing with scattered pockets of anti-government protesters trying to advance on the prime minister's residence after a night of violence that saw hundreds wounded and the first death in more than two weeks of demonstrations.

Senior hospital official Dr. Wasim Khawaja said Sunday that protester Naveed Razzaq drowned in a ditch after he was in a crowd that was bombarded with tear gas. More than 300 people were wounded in the clashes, medical officials said.

Razzaq was a supporter of cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri, who along with famed cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has been leading twin protests since Aug. 14 calling on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign, alleging massive voting fraud in the election that brought him into office last year in Pakistan's first democratic transfer of power.
