Honda is discontinuing its Fit EV by the end of the year as it concentrates on other forms of electrified vehicles like Accord PHEV and the production version of the futuristic-looking FCEV concept that rocked the 2013 L.A. auto show.
The Fit is the latest casualty of Honda’s evolving approach to electromobility. Earlier this year, Honda announced its decision to discontinue the slow-selling Insight hybrid, but this news regarding the Fit EV is, well, news considering the push toward electrification in today’s automotive landscape. Not that the car’s departure is all that surprising: Based on the previous-gen Fit, the EV was mainly built to satisfy a California zero-emissions vehicle mandate and distribution of the lease-only model had always been capped at a mere 1100. In an phone interview with us, Honda spokesman Sage Marie told us that Honda is committed to leasing all 1100 Fit EVs, although he did not know how many more were left on dealer lots in the handful of states to which they were allocated.
What do Honda’s BEV plans hold? Marie had precious little to say on the topic, stating only that “We are committed to electromotive technology, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, BEVs, PHEVs, and fuel-cell vehicles . . . our path forward includes a robust lineup of those technologies.”
It appears that the little CR-Z isn’t going anywhere, however, even though Honda sold even fewer of them than it did Insights—1999 versus 2333 through June—despite a recent refresh for 2013. “It is going to be in our lineup for the foreseeable future,” said Marie.
