About 40 trained youths have been selected to act as langurs in order to screech and scare away the simians in Lutyens Delhi.
The youths have been called by New Delhi Municipal Council to many spots, including the Parliament House that has come under the attack of monkeys.
The langurs appear suddenly from behind the trees and bushes to drive away the monkeys through gestures and sounds.
Urban Development Minister Venkiah Naidu has acknowledged through a written reply in Rajya Sabha that men have been disguising as langurs in order to keep the threat of monkeys in check.
The practice has started after the real langurs were prohibited from being kept in captivity and the human langurs have proved to be useful in their new role, according to NDMC sources.
According to NDMC sources, these men are paid INR 700-800 per visit, however they have not been hired permanently.
The men get work for 10-15 days a month, earning between INR 7000 to 10,000. They have also been hired by RWAs in the area.
