Volkswagen plans to kick off its much-ballyhooed electrification strategy in the United States with the I.D. Crozz, the brand’s first dedicated EV. We’ve seen a concept version of the I.D. Crozz, but we’ve recently learned something more: The model will come in two body styles, and the version previewed by the concept car will not be the first one to arrive.

Speaking at the Chicago auto show, VW’s head of design, Klaus Bischoff, indicated that the I.D. Crozz will first come to market in 2020 as “a traditional squareback,” followed later by a fastback. If you’re like us, what popped immediately to mind at the thought of a squareback VW was the old Beetle-based Type II two-door station wagon. As cool as a modern take on that would be, what Bischoff likely means is a traditional SUV-shaped model.

The I.D. Crozz concepts we’ve seen so far, however, have been the fastback body style. They’ve been roughly the size of the current Tiguan and powered by two electric motors: one in the rear supplemented by one in the front.

It’s possible that we’ll get a concept preview of the squareback I.D. Crozz, and we might not have long to wait for it. It’s rumored that VW will roll out another I.D. Crozz concept next month at the Geneva auto show.
