Agra: Nearly 230 enormous hoardings were erected all along the route that US president Barack Obama would have taken once in Agra, to visit the Taj Mahal on January 27. Late Friday, the plan to visit was cancelled. The hoardings remain as markers of a visit that will not happen.

At least 300 electric poles and sites were shortlisted for displaying the hoardings on the route Obama's cavalcade would have taken, after an elaborate survey. Sources said the hoardings were erected at a cost of at least Rs 3 lakh.

"More than 30 special hoardings showed CM Akhikesh Yadav welcoming the US president. About 50 were of the state information commission," a source said.

The Agra Municipal Corporation featured in 70 hoardings, with the slogan "Green Agra, Clean Agra". Large banners on Mall Road and Fatehabad Road say "Welcome to the City of the Taj". The US president may not read them, ordinary tourists will.

The US first couple also featured in some hoardings.

Agra commissioner Indra Vikram Singh said, "The hoardings were erected as a gesture of warm welcome. There is nothing wrong with that." He added that the Agra Municipal Corporation had not spent any money on the banners - they were erected gratis by a private firm, he said.
