India-US N-deal threatens stability in South Asia: Pak - Hindustan Times

Pakistan on Tuesday reacted sharply to agreements reached by India and the US during President Barack Obama’s visit, saying the operationalization of the Indo-US nuclear deal “would have a detrimental impact on deterrence stability in South Asia”.

In a statement issued shortly after Obama left India, national security advisor Sartaj Aziz said Pakistan reserved the “right to safeguard its national security interests” in the face of the nuclear being operationalised for “political and economic expediencies”.

Aziz said Pakistan was also opposed to “another country-specific exemption from NSG rules to grant membership to India” as it would “further compound fragile strategic stability environment in South Asia”. He added: “Pakistan remains opposed to policies of selectivity and discrimination.”

He also appeared to oppose Obama’s stance that India should be a natural member of an expanded UN Security Council. Pakistan, he said, favours comprehensive reform of the Security Council. In a reference to India, he said a country that allegedly violates UN resolutions on matters such as the Kashmir issue, “by no means qualifies for a special status in the Security Council”.
