Those behind the split in the saffron coalition in Maharashtra are "enemies" of the state, the Shiv Sena said on Friday, a day after its 25-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) collapsed following a dispute over sharing of seats.

"Our other (mahayuti) alliance parties wanted the Sena-BJP combine to continue. More than that, it was what the 11 crore people of Maharashtra wanted. Those who trampled these sentiments are enemies of Maharashtra," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamna said.

The BJP and the Sena finally parted ways on Thursday after days bickering over seat-sharing for the Maharashtra assembly polls slated for October 15. Within hours, the ruling Congress- Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) alliance also collapsed.

This throws open the election field in Maharashtra where the contest could now be four-cornered.

"This (breaking of alliance) is an insult to the 105 Marathi martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement," Sena said, adding, "It is unfortunate that the Sena-BJP alliance which for the last 25 years was bound by the Hindutva ideology has ended."

"Those who till yesterday were praying in this tent are now offering namaz in the other tent."

In the edit, the Sena proclaimed itself as "the real protector of Maharasthra" through its army of Shiv sainiks (soldiers).

"Now, Pitru Paksh is over... Everybody's ancestors came in the form of crows and feasted on food and sweets before leaving happily... Only the political descendents were not ready to make any adjustments in the matter of seat-sharing."

The editorial also said the Congress and its leaders should not worry about the future of a united Mumbai and Maharashtra because the Shiv Sena and the saffron flag will protect the state.

The 288-member state assembly goes to the polls on October 15 and September 27 is the last day of filing election papers. The Sena, a part of the ruling combine at the Centre, said it would continue in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The Sena has 18 members in the Lok Sabha, the most for any NDA constituent after the BJP.

Over the past week or so, the two parties held several rounds of talks, emerging every time to blame each other for not being inflexible and accommodative of each other's proposals.
