Sensex slips over 200 points, Nifty tests 7300; top ten stocks in focus - Economic Times

NEW DELHI: The S&P BSE Sensex plunged over 200 points in trade on Tuesday, led by losses in Reliance Industries Ltd, ONGC, SBI, M&M and HDFC Bank.

Tracking the momentum, the 50-share Nifty index also slipped below its crucial psychological support level of 7300, weighed down by losses in banks, realty, capital goods, power and oil & gas stocks.


At 10:30 a.m.; the BSE Sensex was trading 0.89 per cent lower or 220 points at 24,496. It hit a low of 24,489.08 and a high of 24,777.31 in trade today.


The 50-share Nifty index was trading 63 points lower or 0.87 per cent at 7,295. It hit a low of 7294.85 and a high of 7372.95 in trade today.

Wockhardt: Drug firm Wockhardt reported nearly 78 per cent drop in consolidated net profit at Rs 74.45 crore for the quarter ended March 2014 mainly due to regulatory issues with US and UK health regulators.


At 10:00 a.m.; the stock was trading 3.6 per cent lower at Rs 675.45


India Cements Ltd: Hit by a slump in demand and capacity "overhang", India Cements reported standalone net loss at Rs 30.56 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2014.


At 10:00 a.m.; the stock was trading 5.4 per cent lower at Rs 93.30.


Jubilant Life Sciences Ltd: The company said its subsidiary will receive $147.5 million (over Rs 860 crore) funding from IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, to strengthen its generic drug manufacturing facilities.


At 10:00 a.m.; the stock was trading 4.2 per cent higher at Rs 193.95.


Sterlite Technologies Ltd: The Company said its arm Sterlite Grid Ltd has been awarded sixth ultra- mega transmission project (UMTP) on build-own-operate basis by the Ministry of Power.


At 10:00 a.m.; the stock was trading 5.8 per cent higher at Rs 40.90.


GAIL Ltd: State gas utility GAIL India on Monday reported a 57 per cent jump in its fourth-quarter net profit on the back of better petrochemical and LPG prices and drop in subsidy outgo.


At 10:00 a.m.; the stock was trading 5.3 per cent lower at Rs 388.05.


Praj Industries: The Company said a substantial rise in standalone net profit for the quarter ended March 2014. During the quarter, the profit of the company rose 37.69% to Rs 2.05 million from Rs 1.49 million in the same quarter last year.


At 10:00 a.m.; the stock was trading 3.6 per cent lower at Rs 67.75.


Sonata Software Ltd: Leading IT services firm Sonata Software Ltd has posted a consolidated net profit of Rs.78 crore for fiscal 2013-14, registering a whopping 159 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth.


At 10:00 a.m.; the stock was trading 13 per cent higher at Rs 51.


United Spirits Ltd: The world's largest spirits maker, Diageo plc, has received approval from Securities and Exchanges Board of India (Sebi) for its proposed open offer to pick up an additional 26% stake in India's largest spirits maker United Spirits Ltd (USL).


At 10:00 a.m.; the stock was trading 0.2 per cent higher at Rs 2800.
