When Mazda introduced the RF at this year’s New York auto show, they trotted out the display car swathed in Machine Gray paint, with an Auburn nappa leather interior, capped off by a black roof panel. And that’s what Launch Edition customers will get. Based on the Grand Touring trim level, the cars will offer precisely one choice for the lucky customer to make: manual or automatic. And if you ask us, the latter’s not even an option.
Only a thousand examples are slated for sale in the U.S., and the Hiroshima-based automaker will extend invitations to valued customers via e-mail, who’ll then have a specific amount of time to get in on the ordering action before the great unwashed masses are able to flood Mazda North American Operations with orders of their own.
While run-of-the-mill RFs will be available in Machine Gray with Auburn leather interiors, only the Launch Editions get both paired with the zazzy black roof panel and special badges. A numbered Tourneau watch is part of the deal, too. Procrastinators and impersonators will have to make do with a Grand Touring model, a can of Krylon, and a secondhand Swatch. Shawn’s a Krylon kind of guy, but we don’t know if he’s this sort of Krylon guy. We hope he hears about this new targa-roofed Miata soon.
