2015 Tesla Model S P85D

Tesla Motors‘ tweeter-in-chief Elon Musk took to his favorite social-media platform yesterday after news broke about the ever-upcoming Model X electric crossover, and in the process, he revealed some new tidbits we hadn’t yet heard about the long-promised Model 3. It turns out that you’ll be able to put in your reservation for one very soon.

According to Musk, the Model 3 will be unveiled early next year, with production beginning some time in late 2017. We knew that already, as well as the target price: $35,000 before applying any federal or state green-car incentives. The news here is that, when the automaker officially reveals its Model 3 sedan and crossover in March 2016, you’ll be able to put down your dollars and reserve yours right then and there.

What kind of buyer stakes out a spot in line for a $35,000 more than a year before it begins production? Hard to say, but apparently Musk thinks there will be enough demand for the affordable electric sedan that he’s making it an option.

There’s another potential wrinkle revealed in those two tweets: In order to make good on that timeline, Musk will need his super-huge Gigafactory facility online. Considering the huge amounts of capital that project requires, we’re going to have to wait for this one to play out.
