NEW DELHI: Congress tonight hoped that Speaker SumitraMahajan will "not be misguided" by the opinion of the Attorney General on the issue of the Leader of the Opposition in the LokSabha, insisting that the law officer articulates the government's view.

"Attorney General represents the government's opinion. He articulates the government's viewpoint. Government has nothing to do with it (LoP issue). It is the domain of the Speaker. We will react after the ruling of the Speaker," party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed told PTI.

Asked what are the expectations of the Congress from the Speaker on this issue, he said, "We hope that justice will be done to us as there is a clear-cut law about Leader of Opposition, which was made in 1977 and amended in 2003, which clearly states that the party with the largest number of members on the Opposition side should get the LoP."

He also said that the party hoped that the "Speaker will not be misguided by the opinion of the Attorney General which is the government's opinion".

The party will comment only after the ruling of the Speaker, he said.
