Six injured in Meerut clashes - Times of India

Meerut: At least six people were injured in a stone-pelting incident in Meerut involving members of two communities. The violence began with an argument over Rs 100.

The incident occurred at the Illahi Baksh locality in Meerut, where the Saini gali is inhabited mostly by members of the majority community, even though Feroz Building, at the head of the lane, is inhabited mostly by members of a minority community, a resident of the area who did not wish to be named explained.

The incident that sparked the clashes was an argument over money between two men belonging to different communities, a resident of the area said. One had given the other Rs500 last year, so a cable connection could be installed in his home. The connection could not be installed, for some reason, and Rs400 was returned.

Late Friday, the man to whom Rs 100 was still owed insisted on getting his money, and a dispute arose. The man who owed the money allegedly beat up the one demanding his money back.

Soon, supporters of the two men also entered the fray. Stones were pelted, some from the rooftops of houses in the area. There were allegations that acid was hurled too. The police force proved inadequate, and the mayhem continued for half an hour.

The SSP later reached the spot with additional forces, and policemen wielded lathis to disperse the mob. The district magistrate also reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

Four people were arrested. Forces from the Provincial Armed Constabulary were deployed to keep the peace.

SSP Onkar Singh said, "The situation has been brought under control, and a heavy deployment of police is in place."
