A plane has crashed in Taiwan while trying to make an emergency landing, killing 47 people, officials say.
The TransAsia Airways flight crashed while trying to land on an island off typhoon-hit Taiwan.
Local media reports say the domestic flight smashed into two houses after an aborted landing.
Authorities say TransAsia Airways flight GE222, crashed near the Magong airport on the outlying Penghu island, also known as the Pescadores.
The plane, a 70-seat turboprop ATR 72, crashed near the runway with 54 passengers and four crew on board, authorities say.
A spokesman for the Penghu County Government Fire Bureau, Hsi Wen-guang, says the weather was bad.
"It was thunderstorm conditions during the crash," he said.
"From the crash site we sent 11 people to hospital with injuries.
"A few empty apartment buildings adjacent to the runway caught fire, but no one was inside at the time and the fire was extinguished."
Mr Hsi says about 100 firefighters were sent to the scene.
Local television networks showed footage of TransAsia's president, Chooi Yee-choong, bowing in apology.
"We express our deepest apologies to everyone for this unfortunate event," he said.
Flying through Typhoon Matmo
The plane was flying from Kaohsiung and had been delayed due to bad weather.
A flight ban had been lifted about an hour before the plane had taken off.
Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration director, Jean Shen, said the plane was making a second attempt to land.
"The control tower lost contact with the aircraft soon after they requested a go-around," she said.
Typhoon Matmo slammed into Taiwan on Wednesday with heavy rain and strong winds, shutting financial markets and schools.
TransAsia Airways is a Taiwan-based airline with a fleet of 23 mostly Airbus aircraft, flying mainly on domestic routes.
Flights to Japan, Thailand and Cambodia are among its international destinations.
Taiwan's aviation safety council says apart from this incident, TransAsia has had a total of eight incidents since 2002, including six involving the ATR 72.
